Emerson Bromo-Seltzer Tower

This weeks photo prompt is Alphabet.  A few things came to mind, though nothing that I hadn’t already shared in one form or another.  Since I recycled photos last week, I didn’t want to do that again.  Then I thought of a more recent photo I’d taken while on a trip to Baltimore.

A couple of weeks ago, I shared this photo with you.

I took this photo with my iPhone, it wasn’t technically all that good, but for some reason I was very taken with it. (which is why I shared it) In the background (center right) you can see the top of a tower.  I went back to Baltimore a couple of days later and I took a better photo, slightly closer to this tower.

If you look closely at the face of the clock, you’ll see on the outside of the actual clock are letters.  They spell out: B R O M O S E L T Z E R.  (Bromo Seltzer) Each letter sits above a Roman Numeral.  I do not know if there is some sort of symbolism to that or just a lucky accident.

Thanks to the wonders of Wikipedia, what I do know is that this clock tower is a 15-story skyscraper designed by Joseph Evans Sperry.  It was built in 1911 for the inventor of Bromo Seltzer, Issac E. Emerson.  Bromo Seltzer was a pain relieving antacid.  I do not know if they still make it.  I didn’t research that hard lol.

There isn’t much information on Wikipedia about it, but more than I have here.  So if you want to read more about the Bromo Seltzer clock tower the link is above.

Maybe in the spring, when it’s less dreary and depressing outside, I’ll photograph this again.  From outside of my car.  Dirt and grime aside, I like this area of Baltimore.  This is a very nice area to photograph.  Or at least it would be if it weren’t for all the street signs that jut out into the street and the modern street lights.  I like the original architecture of Baltimore.  It’s a shame they had to screw it up lol

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my submission for this week.
